DIY GUITAR INTONATION: HOW TO GET YOUR GUITAR IN TUNE EVERYWHERE ON THE NECK

Guitar intonation is the least understood part of a setup — and it sounds far more intimidating than it actually is. But here's the honest truth: intonation is just adjusting a screw. There are no soldering irons, no specialist jigs, and no arcane knowledge required. If your guitar sounds fine on open chords but drifts noticeably out of tune as you move up the neck, the saddle position is slightly wrong. That's it. This guide explains why that happens and gives you the exact adjustment sequence to correct it at home.

I set intonation on every guitar that comes through my Dundee workshop, and the process I use is identical to what I'm about to walk you through. The only difference is the tuner — and I'll cover that too, because it matters more than most players realise.


What Is Guitar Intonation and Why Does It Go Wrong?

The Physics, Simplified

Intonation determines whether fretted notes are in tune across the entire length of the neck. The 12th fret divides the string exactly in half. When you fret the 12th note, the pitch should match the 12th-fret harmonic — that bell-like tone produced by lightly touching the string directly over the 12th fret wire without pressing down. If the fretted note is sharper than the harmonic, the string's speaking length is too short, and the saddle needs to move back (away from the nut). If the fretted note is flatter, the speaking length is too long, and the saddle needs to move forward (towards the nut).

That directional rule — sharp means back, flat means forward — is the entire foundation of intonation adjustment. Once you've internalised it, the rest is just patience and small turns of a screwdriver.

Why Intonation Drifts Over Time

Several factors cause intonation to drift, and understanding them saves you from chasing a problem that keeps coming back. String gauge changes are the most common trigger — heavier strings exert more tension and shift the effective scale length, so if you move from 9s to 10s, every saddle position needs rechecking. Fret wear is the second factor: worn frets alter the exact point where the string makes contact, changing the sounding length by a fraction of a millimetre. Saddle wear does the same thing in reverse, particularly on bone or TUSQ saddles that develop grooves over months of string vibration. Even seasonal humidity changes can shift neck relief enough to knock intonation out.

The takeaway is simple: intonation is not a one-and-done job. It's a periodic check, and it should be the last step in every setup sequence.


What You Need Before You Start

The Preparation Checklist

Before you touch an intonation screw, two conditions must be met. First, the guitar must have fresh strings. Old strings with metal fatigue produce unreliable harmonic pitches — the overtone series degrades as the string corrodes, and you'll chase readings that were never accurate in the first place. If your strings are more than a few weeks old, change them before you start.

Second, neck relief and action height must already be correctly set. Intonation is the last step in the setup sequence: relief first, then action, then intonation. If you skip straight to intonation on a neck with incorrect relief or action, you'll get measurements that change the moment you go back and correct those earlier variables. The order matters.


How to Set Guitar Intonation Step by Step

Step 1 — Tune to Concert Pitch

Tune each string to concert pitch (A4 = 440 Hz) using your tuner. The guitar must be at full playing tension — do not check intonation with slackened or partially tuned strings, because tension directly affects the scale length calculation. If possible, tune in the same position you normally play. This sounds fussy, but strap length affects neck angle, and neck angle introduces minor tension variation. Sitting versus standing can shift a reading by a cent or two on the wound strings.

Step 2 — Compare the Harmonic to the Fretted Note

This is the core measurement. Play the 12th-fret harmonic by lightly resting a fingertip over the 12th fret wire — directly above it, not behind it — without pressing down, and pluck the string cleanly. Note the pitch reading on your tuner. Then press the string firmly at the 12th fret, exactly behind the fret wire as you would when playing normally, and pluck again. Compare the two readings.

Here's where tuner choice becomes critical. A standard clip-on tuner typically has a resolution of around ±1 cent. That's fine for getting in tune, but it's not sensitive enough to detect the small deviations of 1–3 cents that indicate an intonation error. You'll see both readings appear to match, declare victory, and then wonder why barred chords at the 7th fret still sound slightly off.

Step 3 — Adjust the Saddle Position

Using a small flat-head or Phillips screwdriver (depending on your bridge type), turn the saddle intonation screw. On a Tune-o-Matic or Nashville bridge, each saddle has its own dedicated screw at the rear of the bridge. On a Fender-style bent-steel saddle plate, a small intonation screw at the back of the bridge controls each saddle's fore-and-aft position independently.

The key discipline here is small adjustments. A quarter turn at most, then re-tune the string fully to pitch before rechecking the harmonic-versus-fretted comparison. I see players make the mistake of adjusting the saddle, rechecking immediately without re-tuning, and getting a false reading because the tension has shifted. Every saddle movement changes the string tension slightly. Re-tune, then recheck. Every time.

If the fretted 12th-fret note reads sharp: turn the screw to move the saddle away from the nut (lengthening the string). If the fretted note reads flat: move the saddle towards the nut (shortening the string). Repeat until the harmonic and the fretted note read identically on the strobe display.

Step 4 — Repeat for Every String, Then Verify

Intonation must be set string by string. Do not assume that correcting the low-E will proportionally fix the high-E — each string has a unique diameter, mass, tension, and stiffness that produces its own scale length deviation. A wound string behaves very differently from a plain steel string, even at similar tension. Work from the thickest string to the thinnest, re-tuning fully between each one.

After completing all six strings, do a final whole-neck verification. Play a barred E-shape chord at the 1st fret, then slide it up to the 5th, 9th, and 12th frets in sequence. Listen carefully. If the chord sounds consistently in tune at all four positions — no sourness, no beating between notes — the intonation is set. That moment, when a chord rings cleanly at the 12th fret for the first time after a proper setup, is genuinely one of the most satisfying things in guitar maintenance.


What If the Saddle Cannot Move Far Enough?

There are occasions where the saddle reaches its maximum forward or backward travel and the intonation still cannot be brought into agreement. This is frustrating, but it tells you something useful: the problem is structural, not adjustable.

The most common causes are a nut cut at the wrong position (shifting the entire scale length), an incorrect scale length calculation during manufacture (rare, but I've seen it on budget instruments more than once), or significant fret wear that has shifted the effective sounding point of the string. On older guitars, I've also seen bridge posts that have been filled and re-drilled slightly off-centre during a previous repair, which limits saddle travel.

How Often Should You Check Intonation?

For a guitar played regularly with the same string gauge, intonation should be checked every time you restring — roughly every four to eight weeks for most players. It takes five minutes once you've done it a couple of times, and it becomes second nature.

Any time you change string gauge, even by a single step (for example, from 10s to 11s), full reintonation is mandatory. The tension difference shifts every saddle position. This catches people out more often than you'd expect — they try a heavier gauge for a fuller tone, enjoy the feel, but never reintonate, and then spend weeks wondering why the guitar sounds subtly wrong past the 5th fret.

Seasonal changes matter too, particularly here in the UK. Indoor heating during winter drops humidity significantly, which affects the wood in the neck and can shift relief by enough to knock intonation out. A full setup check at the start of each winter and summer is worthwhile. I do this on my own instruments as a matter of routine — it takes twenty minutes twice a year and keeps everything feeling right.


Fretboard Hygiene After a Setup

A fresh setup is the ideal moment to clean and condition the fretboard, because the strings are already off and the full wood surface is exposed. I make this part of every setup I do in the workshop, and I'd encourage you to do the same at home.

During a restring, sweat residue, dead skin, and general grime sit exposed between the frets. That build-up is mildly corrosive — it accelerates fret wear over time, which brings you right back to intonation and buzz problems sooner than necessary. Applying Clarity Wash to a lint-free cloth and wiping between and along the frets lifts that residue cleanly. It's plant-based, pH-neutral, and free of silicones and d-limonene, so it's safe on every finish type including vintage nitrocellulose.

After cleaning, follow up with Resonance Balm — a plant-based, vegan fretboard conditioner — to restore hydration to the wood. The Intonation Sequence, One More Time
